Which First dance song should I have?
So you have decided you are going to have a First Dance song on your wedding day. Now – which song to have and why. Not as easy as it sounds for some couples…
Some couples spend as long trying to settle on this one song as they do on the rest of the playlist. To other couples it’s a no brainer. The song that was playing when they met, went on their 1st Date, when they got engaged, 1st movie, favourite movie etc. Other couples not so straight forward. Sometimes it can be too many to choose from – you just can’t whittle the list down to 1.
Hopefully I’ll give you a little food for thought if you haven’t decided just yet.
Have what you want!
Sounds simple, but really, just have what you want that makes you both feel comfortable and means something to you. Traditional slow songs are still requested but so are other alternative choices. I have played first dance classics like Lets stay together – Al Green, True love ways – Buddy holly, to modern classics like Amazing – Lonestar and All of me –John Legend. But I have also played songs that are not so well know like Teneriffe Sea – Ed Sheeran or more upbeat songs like Rather Be – Clean Bandit and Never can Tell – Chuck Berry. It’s your time, you choose what you want.
More than one first dance song?
Why not pick 2 songs, a 1st and a 2nd ? When I got married back in 1996 my wife and I had 3 songs. Our song, her song and my song. We had Love is all around – Wet Wet Wet as our 1st dance as it was one of our 1st movies we went out to. My wife’s song was Perfect Year – Dina Caroll – because we met on New Years Eve, and my song was I promise you – Michael Bolton and 19yrs later (in 18 days) I’m still holding up on that promise. 🙂
So basically…
The choice is yours, no really. Whether it’s a classic ballad, an unknown album track, or an upbeat jump and shout tune, just make sure the first dance song means something to you both. Don’t think about what others may or may not think. Whether it’s from a time, a place, a movie, a moment, have something that means something.
